The Service Centre for the Voluntary Sector in the province of Milan held that it was necessary to set up a Documentation Centre which is not merely a library but a place for accurately collecting all published material on the subject of the third sector (books, periodicals for the sector, grey documentation, etc.). Given that the Lombardy section of MOVI (Movimento di Volontariato Italiano, Italian Voluntary Movement) possessed a specialised library it was decided, as part of an agreement with the provincial administration of Milan, that the two documentation centres be brought together into a single catalogue. Each accession was recorded following cataloguing criteria recognised at the European level, allowing users to carry out searches according to several parameters (by author, title, publisher, etc.). The next step was to ensure that these searches could be carried out directly on-line by creating an annotated electronic catalogue accessible to everyone from the pages of the association’s website www.ciessevi.org without the need to go to the library, but seated comfortably at one’s own computer instead.
